Multimorbidity, defined as the presence of two or more chronic conditions within the same individual, is highly prevalent among older adults with fractures and is associated with excess mortality. Adding to this challenge, fracture risk in this population is often underestimated and underprioritised due to competing health concerns.
In this webinar, Prof. Robert Blank will review ways of quantifying refracture risk across different multimorbidity clusters and fracture sites, in order to identify high-risk individuals. He will also emphasise that multimorbidity does not attenuate refracture risk; instead, it heightens vulnerability among older fracture patients, even in the presence of competing mortality. Participants will gain insight into the need for timely, targeted secondary fracture prevention measures, particularly following non-hip, non-vertebral fractures. KEY LEARNING OBJECTIVES OF THIS WEBINAR INCLUDE:• Understanding the impact of multimorbidity on the risk of a first fracture, and especially a subsequent fracture, as well as on mortality among older adults who have sustained a fracture. • Identifying fracture and refracture risk across different multimorbidity scenarios and fracture sites to identify individuals at high risk. • Examining the importance of timely, targeted secondary fracture prevention, despite competing health risks. |
